Birthday and guns!

Hey! Long time no see. I’ve been absent for a while, both because I’ve been super busy with school but also because I encountered my first writers block. Yay for new experiences! I’ve moved past it however, so here we go:

February has passed, and that means I left my teens and stepped into the world of grownups! Yep, Wednesday the 27th I turned 20. And to celebrate that, because surely getting older is something you would want to celebrate ;), I had dinner with my mom and grandma at lovely vegan and raw food restaurant Firefly Garden (fireflygarden.com) in Copenhagen.

It was kind of an interesting day at The Film Actor's Academy that day. It went from challenging and uncomfortable to completely relaxing. At first, Kenneth (teacher and founder of the school) wrote the words ‘comfort zone’ on the white board. We all had to tell what would bring us out of our comfort zone, what would make us most uncomfortable. At first (naïve as I am) I thought we were just brainstorming. But of course there was more to it than that, and soon he had us all do the very thing we had just mentioned, one at a time (e.g. singing, dancing, improvising in front of everyone and so on). After that horrendous experience (horrendous in a good ish evolving kinda way...) he took us all on a long-awaited trip to the spa (something he had promised us months before for some good reason I don't remember) where we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in steam and bubble baths (oh the stressful life of an acting student).

I have now seen the videos from back in January when we filmed that scene I mentioned (with the gun in a car in a parking lot), and they turned out okay. The scene was a little ‘tough’ to do character wise, because it’s a pretty far out situation (this psycho dude kidnapped our little sister, and is now forcing us to do all sorts of things for him, like murdering an innocent man who turns out to be my characters neighbor!) but I think we managed to look authentic. Except for the part where I’m shooting the neighbor, since the gun, of course, didn’t go off for real, so there was no BANG and no blood, and apparently it’s supposed to be excruciatingly loud to shoot someone inside a car and we didn’t really get that part down. It was a little difficult for me to imagine what it’s like to actually take somebody else’s life, since, well, that is something I’ve never actually tried. But of course that’s the fun part and what acting is all about.

As it was my first time shooting a scene on location and with a real camera and microphone, it was pretty exciting. At first we did three takes with the camera pointing at me, then three of my partner, Christina. After that we shot all the 'actions', like opening the car door, picking up the gun, handing over a water bottle and so on.

The water bottle was handed over 15 times before we got it right...

I wanted to upload a bit of one of the videos, but Windows Movie Maker is not cooperative today so you'll have to do with a few pics instead.

And since it's confidential teaching material, I won't post anything of my partner so you only get me ;)

This was only for training and experience so it won't be made into an actual film. We did however make another film, a sort of 'midterm' project we shot in february which is in the process of getting cut right now. We just saw the rough cut* and it looks really promising, so I'm very excited about seeing the final product when we graduate! I might write more about it and maybe even throw in some pictures in the next post ;)

*Wikipedia's explanation of rough cut: In film making, the rough cut is the second of three stages of offline editing. The rough cut is the first stage in which the film begins to resemble its final product. Rough cuts do not flow well and still undergo many changes before the release of the film.

Until next time!
